They are composed of cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony) with iron oxide inclusions that create their distinctive two-tone banding. The stones are naturally shaped by the river's current over thousands of years, then hand-polished by local craftspeople. They are collected only once a year during a specific festival season. The Narmada River is considered sacred to Shiva, and these stones are used in Hindu worship throughout India.
